Image right: This graphic illustration of Titan's internal structure shows the layers involved in releasing methane during three episodes in the moon's history.

Among our solar system’s more than 150 known moons, Titan is the only one with a substantial atmosphere. Titan probably has methane lakes, which supply methane to the atmosphere. An international team of planetary scientists may have solved the mystery of why the atmosphere of Saturn's moon, Titan, is rich in methane.

Additionally, the solar wind is weaker at the distance, so there is also less velocity added to the molecules of the upper atmosphere. But really, if the universe is only 6,000 years old, astronomers would be able to see out only 6,000 light-years. Recently, Chris McKay of the NASA Ames Research Center gave a public lecture concerning Titan, … Introduction Saturn’s largest moon Titan is an extraordinary and exceptional world. How to Get an Atmosphere Of solid bodies in the solar system, only four have major atmospheres. Methane, the main component in natural gas, plays a key role in the makeup of atmospheric conditions on Titan. Since Titan’s atmosphere is almost entirely nitrogen and nitrogen is able to withstand the lower amounts of solar radiation that Titan receives relative to Mars even without a magnetosphere, Titan is able to maintain an atmosphere of nitrogen.

Sounds of Titan Hear the first-ever audio recording from one billion miles away. Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a significantly dense atmosphere. A) It was formed that way in the solar nebula. Our moon, however, is about plus 100 degrees Celsius when it's lit by the Sun. Titan has an atmosphere because although its escape velocity is low, it is so far from the sun that it is very cold, thus most gas atoms don't move fast enough to escape. The explanation behind this discrepancy is due to the composition of Titan’s atmosphere. Oxygen molecules weigh 32 units, Nitrogen 28, Methane only about 16, if I remember these things correctly. Over time, heat from infalling objects and from the decay of radioactive elements within its rocks liberated much of this gas, creating the dense nitrogen-rich atmosphere we see today.

Heavier than what? So say goodbye to the Andromeda Galaxy (2.5 million light-years away), not to mention … The research appears in the May 13 edition of the journal Science. So Titan is able to hold onto that atmosphere which the moon can't. B) The nitrogen comes from the breakup of ammonia (NH3) by solar radiation and subsequent thermal escape of the hydrogen.

In the spring, sunlight decomposes the molecular chlorine, leading to the famous annual Antarctic “ozone hole”.
I don't think we have a good theory as to why Titan has an atmosphere and the Moon does not, except for the very large difference in distance from the Sun, hence less UV breaking down molecules into atoms, and less Solar Wind to blow them away. Titan is cooler than Mercury, as it receives less solar energy, which means that the molecules of it's atmosphere are slower on the average.
Why? Titan's atmosphere contains no ozone; however the CIRS results show that a large part of its atmosphere is isolated during the polar night, and that could allow unusual and complex chemistry to occur.
