There was a certain allure of spending a week in southern Fiordland – the most remote part of New Zealand – a ruggedly beautiful place. View Larger Image ; On Christmas Eve we set off from the West Arm of Lake Manapouri with around a weeks’ worth of food, packrafting and tramping gear, a bunch of TOPO maps and loose plans to make it to Foveaux Strait. We had a small box of food delivered to Lake Roe Hut on the Dusky Track to pick on the way.

So on 4th December we headed into the wilderness for 8-10 days.
It must be one of the toughest walks I’ve ever done. Start at Hauroko Hut.

All of these trailheads are fairly isolated, accessible only by boat or floatplane. Can't say for sure what dates I'll be there but was looking at November/December. The track isY-shaped with trailheads at Lake Hauroko to the south, Dusky Sound to the west, and Lake Manapouri to the north. If there was one word for this track, it would be “tough”, t, o, u g, h. It’s not just the two alpine passes that have to be conquered, nor the mud, nor even finding the track. After over ten years of walking mountains and valleys across the rest of the South Island, finally we got our ducks lined up for the Dusky!

Still, I came here tingling with anticipation at the prospect of seeing the unpolished side of one of the planet’s most pristine wildernesses, with its wildly tangled rainforest and boundless mountain views. There are no roads in or out, you have to catch a boat over a lake to the start the track, and then boat out across another lake. For many years it has been on the Moa Hunters’ must-do list of tramping tracks. Billed as the toughest marked route in New Zealand it takes 8-12 days depending on the weather, crosses countless rivers and swamps and cuts over two mountain ranges to the remote Dusky Sound.
