On June 16, 1992, an F5 tornado devastated the towns of Chandler and Lake Wilson in Murray County. Early area residents were drawn by the availability of fertile farmland and endless opportunities. But the community rebuilt and continues to prosper with many successful businesses and farms. Chandler, located in Murray County in southwest Minnesota, was platted in 1886. The building had been rendered unusable, with an entire top floor wiped out. The 2023 Chandler, Minnesota Tornado was a violent EF5-rated which impacted Chandler and surrounding areas in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 3, 2023. It was the most powerful tornado recorded in the US that year and the eighth F5 to touch down in Minnesota, reaching wind speeds in excess of 260 miles per hour and causing over $50 million in property damage. Commonly referred as the Chandler-Lake Wilson tornado, this tornado destroyed more than 75 homes with another 90 homes, 10 businesses, a church and school damaged. After the tornado, the school consolidated with Slayton, creating Murray County Central. That farmland continues to serve as the basis for the area's economy and to provide new opportunities for today's residents and future generations. The tornado badly damaged the Chandler-Lake Wilson School, which had only opened in 1972. In June of 1992, Chandler was hit by a F5 tornado that destroyed a big part of the community.
